Every manufacturer who pours wax knows the first complaint that lands the day after a new batch ships: it does not smell strong enough on the first burn. The reflex is to blame fragrance load. It is not. Weak first-light throw is almost always a wick-sizing and wick-type problem that has a measurable answer hidden in the first thirty minutes of the burn window, in the carbon that remains on the wick when you kill it.
The Problem: Weak Throw That No Formula Change Will Fix
You upped the load two points. You swapped to a "higher-performing" blend. You switched vessel wall thickness. The first burn still underperforms. That is not a formulation problem. It is a wick problem: the wick is either pulling too little wax to vaporize the fragrance in the first light, or it is pulling too much and running a pool hot enough to burn off your top notes before they reach the air. Either failure mode announces itself in the first thirty minutes and can be read the same way: the wick's carbon char height.

When you extinguish a wick, carbon residue remains on the stub. That char is not a defect. It is a readout. Char-height testing is cheap enough to run on every production run. Before a batch ships, pull one vessel, trim to a quarter inch, light it, and after thirty minutes confirm the char is between 3 and 7 millimeters and the pool covers the edge. That single check sits between you and the customer complaint, and it catches the two failure modes that dominate the category: underdraw and overdraw.
